I’m an avid tennis player, and I really do enjoy thinking about the strategy and theory of tennis. In the summer of 2015, I played a series of tennis matches with my friend Sanjay Kaliyur. To get a flavor for our styles, here’s a highlight video of some of the points we played:

Naturally, I lost every single match to Sanjay. My competitive instinct kicked in, and I devoted myself to figuring out a way to make myself more competitive against him.

Enter Project Federer, a data-driven tennis project which was created out of a desire to draw out new statistical methods and measures that will be used as a basis for evaluating match play, evaluating a player’s strengths and weaknesses, and crafting tennis strategy — in short, to allow me to figure out some way to beat Sanjay.
